S3/ E6/ PT2: Guest Dr. Ammon Lovell, Caregiver Burnout and Structured Support
In part two of our conversation with Ammon, a neurotrauma specialist and Doctor of Physical Therapy at Barrow Neurological Institute, we move from the joy of the Cupid Shuffle into the complicated realities of recovery after leaving the hospital. Ammon explains the “three-legged stool” of recovery: the nature of the injury, the survivor’s health before the injury, and the strength of their clinical and family support.
Together, Erin, Amanda, and Ammon discuss caregiver burnout, the fear of going home without a hospital call button, and why families need structured, ongoing support... not simply well-meaning friends. They also explore the resources families may not know exist and the importance of accepting help without believing someone else deserves it more. Finally, Ammon reflects on truly seeing the whole person behind the diagnosis, and the goodness, determination, and dinosaur shirts that made Dallas unforgettable. This episode is a compassionate reminder that recovery requires more than therapy: it requires resources, relationships, community, and people who refuse to let survivors and caregivers fall through the cracks.
Ammon volunteers with Ability 360 in Phoenix, Arizona.
